When furnishing a country house — whether a small garden cottage or a solidly built dacha — many people bring there the furniture that has outlived its usefulness in a city apartment. And most often this makes the whole setting mismatched, bulky, and at odds with the idea of a place for rest.
Meanwhile, it is not at all difficult to furnish a country interior with pieces that are easy to make and convenient to use — ones you can build yourself, gradually assembling an original set that ends up in a single style. Here, for example, is a simple yet attractive wall shelving unit suggested by the Hungarian magazine “Ezermester”, suitable not only for a country house but also for a youth room in a city apartment.
A distinctive feature of the unit is that, while it looks like a single (solid) structure, it is nevertheless modular and demountable, assembled from several modular parts, much like a children’s construction set.

There are not that many such parts. First of all, these are the supporting uprights made of pipes (gas or water pipes) and tubular plastic or metal spacers that fit onto them; the inner diameter of the spacers allows them to be threaded onto the main uprights like beads. The spacers serve a dual purpose: separating the shelves while also acting as intermediate supports for them.
The next module is the shelves themselves. They are made from furniture board or chipboard and are also threaded onto the uprights. Despite their large number, there are only three kinds: short, medium, and long. Yet the many ways of alternating them on the uprights, using spacers of different sizes, provide unlimited combinatorial possibilities when assembling the unit, depending on the intended look and the items meant to be placed on the shelves: books, equipment, plants, decorative ornaments. (Of course, individual shelf sections can also be made closed, with doors or glazing, but that is already a different version of the unit).
If needed, an additional panel of the same material as the shelves is attached to one of the shelves with piano hinges — then you get a fold-down table that adds convenience for working at it or for using the unit.
The unit is assembled on the floor, in a lying position; when assembly is finished, the completed structure is raised against the wall of the room and fastened to it in several places with short metal angles that improve the stability of the structure. The upper ends of the uprights above the top shelves are decorated with wooden plugs shaped like mushrooms or covered with suitable plastic caps.
