The family of KAMAZ trucks filled up by the new special armored SBA-60-K2 “Bulat”. This war machine was created with the use of units, assemblies and series parts, KAMAZ-5350, commonly known as “Mustang”, which as a military truck was called to military service in 2002, the Mustang has a capacity of 6 tons, a curb weight of 15.4 tons; its 260-horsepower diesel engine allows to reach the speed of 100 km/h. It is a three-axis front-engined car with permanent all-wheel drive (6×6) driven front wheels and two closely spaced rear axles. Carrier system – spar frame. Designed and manufactured by the Kama automobile plant.
The army vehicle is used to transport personnel and military cargo transportation, the towing of artillery systems, special and transport trailers. In addition, its chassis can mount various types of weapons and military equipment. “Mustang” is well adapted for use not only on highways but also on unpaved roads and rugged terrain.
That’s based on such a car and made transport armored car “Bulat”.
Currently, there are several ways of designing transport machines:
- installation of cab and body directly on the chassis serial;
- the creation of a new chassis with the use of aggregates and other heavy vehicles;
- the use of designs already developed in the production of aggregates and production vehicles.
At last the path went to the developers of the new “Bulat”, to use in its design and chassis, and assemblies of the truck. Right distributed loads on three axes, the position of the center of gravity of the machine allowed to maintain the positive characteristics of the “core” vehicle KAMAZ-5350 in the first place, stability, maneuverability.
Applying a carrier body armor and the “bonnet” scheme of arrangement, the designers have provided and cover the engine and its systems, as well as protection of the crew compartment and landing combined in “a single habitable volume”. In the front of the hull of the armored car – in the office – some chairs placed the commander (right) and driver side (left). In an air chair for cushioning devices with folding seats set along the sides, in the passage between them has left enough space for stowage of ammunition and other property. Between seats mounted racks for personal weapons. In total there can accommodate up to eight fully equipped soldiers.

The case has four hinged doors, two in front and two in the stern, with multi-layered transparent armor and built-in loopholes, such as Windows and battlements – on the left and right sides and in the roof – six escape hatches. In the stern there are boxes of spare parts. One-piece windshield safety glass car equipped with electric heating.
The driver’s seat to improve visibility of the camera is equipped with a rear view monitor on the front panel. The building has air conditioning, plus auxiliary heater, forced ventilation system, intercom “crew-street.” System blackout turns off the interior lighting when opening the doors.
It is possible to acquisition car spotlight-seeker with a remote control, filtering plant, equipment suppression of radio line control explosive devices, and also devices of night driving and the system of circular video surveillance, satellite navigation system.
“Bulat” is a front-engined car. Under its hood is placed 8-cylinder engine KAMAZ 740.31-240 turbocharged. It is a diesel with a mass of 885 kg has a capacity of 240 HP with the working volume of 10.85 L.

With him using the upgraded ten-stage gearbox model 152 consisting of a main five-speed gearbox and front two-step gear-divider, which has the highest and lowest transfer. The combination of the main box allows you to ten forward gears and two reverse. The use of divider gears have improved tegemoetkomingen quality of the car, easier management, since its use reduces the frequency of gear shift lever switch.
The engine is protected by armor; has a sprinkler system. Fuel tanks with a capacity of 125 l placed on both sides.
Case “Bulat” – all-welded steel has rational angles armor plates. Their edges in the manufacture of stacked “before”, and only then are welded to each other. The window openings in the sides are reinforced with armor plates and doors have reinforcing ribs. Inside the enclosure must have a lining made of aramid fabric “Kevlar” is a synthetic fiber of high mechanical and thermal strength. Only the most high strength grade steel with special treatment closer to him by their tensile strength which can reach up to 280 and even 550 kg/mm2. Steel, for comparison, this parameter is in the range of 50 – 150 kg/mm2.
The machine frame is designed to protect the crew from small arms at the 6th grade GOST R 50963-96. This means that secured soldiers from weapons like the sniper rifle Dragunov (SVD). According to GOST armor plate needs to withstand shots from SVD ammo 7Н13 produced at a distance of only 5 – 10 m.
Case “Bulat” is protected by the 6th grade around the perimeter, but the roof of the car can withstand a bullet SVD only if it enters at an angle less than 60°, but it cannot penetrate a bullet fired from the machine gun, even with a steel core. In addition, it prevents the lesion from shrapnel grenades rocket-propelled grenades, hand grenades.

Special anti-mine protection on the car is not compromised. Although it contributes to some of the V-shape of the bottom bronekapsuly and its rigidity, suspension antitrauamtic seats in the troop compartment. All this totally protects from the effects of detonation under the wheel of the armored car, anti-personnel, anti-vehicle mines or improvised charge with mass of explosive up to 2 – 4 kg in a trotyl equivalent, and also from the impact of 1 kg of TNT under the bottom or hand grenades on the roof.
Thus, the protection class for roof and floor plates, defined as the 5th according to GOST, the engine compartment also has a 5-th class.
It should be noted that the 6th class of protection according to our guest is consistent with the 3rd level NATO STANAG 4569 from January 2004, and 5th class – 2nd level.
The design of the armored car involves the possibility of placing rooftop missiles for various purposes, machine gun with remote control or even small turrets with weapons, for example, PBU-1 as on the BTR-80.
The first sample of the armored car “Bulat” gathered in Moscow on the Corporation “Protection” in February 2012, then conducted and factory tests. For the first time the car was shown to the experts in the exhibition “defense and protection”, held in Nizhny Tagil in 2012
“Bulat” can be operated in any climatic conditions in all areas of our country. This machine meets the requirements of the Ministry of defence of the Russian Federation applicable to vehicles of this class.
