Nowadays, many people use a bicycle as an indoor trainer in winter. The designs for the base vary widely. What they probably have in common is one thing: it gets rather boring to pedal in place. On a real road, the situation is constantly changing, which adds variety to the ride.
But it is possible to simulate such riding at home — it is enough to mount an endless belt with an image of the road surface and its surroundings on the front of the trainer’s frame, and connect it to the pedal drive.
Here is the basic layout of such a device, proposed by Polish cycling enthusiasts. The base frame is made so that a bicycle can be mounted on it without both wheels. Then it is easy to use a chain drive to set the “road surface” in motion under the front fork, to which a toy car placed on the “road” is attached by a wire tether. As the endless belt with the road image moves, turning the bicycle handlebars lets you control the car’s position on it, creating a kind of race “behind the leader.”

From the drawings and diagrams shown, the trainer’s design and the interaction of its units are clear. The chain drive from the pedals is looped onto a small sprocket (from the rear wheel) mounted on the intermediate shaft. From there, rotation is transmitted by rubber cords or belts to the endless belt’s drive shaft. Belt tension is provided by the hinged suspension of the “road surface” driven shaft; the shaft is tensioned by a rubber or spring damper attached to the frame.
By changing the pedaling rate, you vary the speed of the endless belt, and therefore the speed of the “leader” car on the “road” with its bends, road signs, and other surroundings.
