All-wheel-drive car BMW X5 2006. Not so long ago we introduced readers to a BMW X5 of the company Bayerische Motoren Werke, first unveiled at the 1999 Detroit auto show. The first in the history of the company four-wheel drive SUV with a distinctive sporty character caused a sensation in the automotive world. However, the producers didn’t call him neither a jeep nor an SUV nor a crossover: BMW X5, they took to the specially designed class of vehicles called SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle), which translated to English means something like “sports-active car”.
BMW X5 of the sample in 1999 was so well-established machine, that the release in 2006 of the same name the new car was to his fans a complete surprise.
The assumption that buyers are offered a restyled version of the car the end of the last century, turned out to be wrong — the firm has developed a completely new machine, using all of the same ideological concept of the SAV.
The car was at 187 mm longer and 61 mm wider than its predecessor, and its wheelbase has increased by 113 mm. However, the X5 retains the basic proportions and brand awareness.

The xDrive system consists of two main devices — a Central multi-plate clutch with electronic control, which distributes torque between the axles and the system of exchange rate stabilization DSC, which governs efforts directed at individual wheels.

Normally, when driving in a straight multiplate clutch partially closed, which allows to bring the front wheels about 40 percent of the total torque. However, to manage all these devices on the vehicle with a high center of gravity had to use the new FlexRay system with an enlarged 20 times the throughput from 0.5 to 29 MB/s, which allowed to reduce the reaction time of active dampers with 10 to 2.5 milliseconds.

The fuel is injected into the combustion chamber of four times per clock — double pilot injection, main and extension. The maximum torque of the engine 45 Nm higher than that of gasoline 4.8-liter, due to the variable geometry turbocharger.

The brakes on the X5 deserve special praise. The operation of the ABS and the above-mentioned Activ Steering (active steering) ensures smooth deceleration of the vehicle.
