“BURAN” IS NOT AFRAID OF COLD

What is the snowmobile (motonarty) motorcycle everyone knows who is familiar with these vehicles. Mainly because the first — track and adapted to ride on the snow cover and the second wheel to move on the ground. But for comfort they are the same: open, although the motorcycles are operated mainly in the warmer time of the year, snowmobiles in winter and even in the cold of winter.

 
As you can see in the article table, taken from the manual of a snowmobile “Buran”, even a low speed of movement of the vehicle, and even against the wind, greatly adds cooling to the driver.
 
And so the idea of additional equipment snowmobile “Buran” windproof and if possible, a heated cabin, was not only natural, but, as they say, suggests itself.
 
Originally there were several variants of re-equipment “Buran”. One of them is to cover the entire one — piece snowmobile cabin. But for such needed lightweight and durable materials — otherwise would be greatly increased vehicle weight, increased the location of its center of gravity and worsened already bad stability.
 
The second option is to Supplement the snowmobile partneremployees double cabin, accommodation for the passenger side from the driver. But this option was rejected because of the considerable weight of cab — power snowmobile in some road (or rather off-road) situations could not be enough.
 
It was decided to stay in a single cabin, putting it on the “quilted” and coclanis the cab articulated with the “Buran”. But this option was not final. In the future, from the “scientists” had to be abandoned: after all, a high enough speed they will not develop. Disappeared and the option of swivel modules — to carry out this node in a home workshop is not possible, and other means of production were not found. Moreover, this articulation promised a loss of obedience of the machine when cornering on slippery snow.

The final choice (largely a compromise) fell to single dukhobory ski cab option with tandem location — front snowmobile-pusher, and a rigid connection of the modules to each other.
 
Moreover, the emphasis on minimal changes in the design of the snowmobile while retaining the ability of operation without a cabin. When combined cabin and snowmobile (CC) with the “Buran” demountable wheel with its shaft and guiding the ski. Removed items are placed in the body. So that at the right moment can quickly detach the cabin, to restore the management and use of the snowmobile separately in the normal mode.
 
Tandem “Compromise” provides an opportunity to exploit it in the following ways: 1 — driver + cargo in the back (main); 2 — driver + two passengers on the seat Motonari; 3 — driver + passenger and cargo in the back (extreme). The required option is selected under specific conditions.
 
The cab is the closed, single, with one door located on the left side. The frame is mostly welded of thin-walled steel tubes with outer diameter of 27 mm, and in particularly critical places the joints reinforced with gussets. And only the cross member, which serves as both the bottom front cross bar of the frame and the axle beam, made of two-inch pipe with a wall thickness of 3 mm. the Bottom and rear wall of the cab consists of a steel sheet with a thickness of 1,8 mm. the Rigidity of the bottom attached along the entire length of a special chute, a small deadrise and the “ridges” (edges), and also curved in the tube sidewall. By pass chute control cables, carburetor and brake. Additionally, the gutter serves as a collection of melt water, which is removed by gravity it outside the cab through a hole in the back of the bottoms. On the entire available internal area of the bottom (except the chute) is attached with a layer of dense felt. The same insulation has and the back wall of the cab.
 
To connect the cabin with the snowmobile of tubes of rectangular cross section is welded a simple frame, consisting of two consoles, connected ahead of the crossmember. The console pass through the rear wall of the cab and connected to it by welding rails together with a cross welded to the bottom. Scarves are the platforms of the seat supports. On the rear ends of the consoles articulated, slightly curved to the contours of the bumper of the “Buran” welded fork lugs with holes for mounting bolts. The last pass through the bumper of a snowmobile in the holes drilled in place. Additionally, console half-frames fastened to the cabin struts, and the snowmobile — and even tie.
 
Articulated cross bar carries the plug under the seat set, bracket, control lever reverse gear snowmobile and curved platform — tool tray for the heater. Bottom in the Central part of the crossmember is welded on the lug that connects the adjustable headband with pivot the skis of the snowmobile.
 
Shells, casings, doors, roof and top of the nose of the cockpit — the three-layer, consists of external and internal plywood panels and a layer of foam between them. The pipe frame of the cabin trim is attached with small screws with countersunk head, and the inner and outer panels are connected by a further wire brackets. In front of the cabin cover technological hatch, which hinged open forwards. In the closed position it is retained by the spring retainer. The inside of the cover has a “pocket” under neprikosnovennyi zapas (NZ).
 
For easy operation, the cab features a wide door. For this purpose the steering wheel is made in the form of a sector (half-ring), and hub shifted forward by 200 mm. Raised and the seat (although to the detriment of the centre of gravity), it is from motorized С3Д, radically redesigned but with retained regulations. The head protects the cushion of the head restraint installed in the rear opening of the review of spherical glass.

Door frame welded from square tubes. The door in the bottom has a three-layer structure. And at the top in the gasket installed windshield. Hung the door on the two adjustable hinges. With internal and external parties for opening provided by a door handle; a latch-lock. For easy entry into the cockpit is designed the cable clip under the foot.
 
Cabin heating is a heating installation, located on the right side of the seat where it is fixed by a special bracket. The heated air goes to the feet of the driver. Fuel tank heater is installed outside the cabin on the left console of the frame and fixed with a clamp with a strip of rubber. Embedded in the fuel line the fuel pump and filter-sump. All this highway passes inside the cabin.
 
Use a gasoline heater demanded strict adherence to the rules of fire safety, careful and attentive treatment plant, necessary to keep it always in good condition, and in the cabin always have a fire extinguisher. For ventilating openings are provided with a valve, situated right at the top of the back wall.

Managing appliances is accomplished with upper and lower consoles. The recent easy-to-set AM/FM clock radio, when it is set into the socket of the remote to it automatically connects to the external telescopic antenna. Located next to the toggle switches control the electrical circuits of the headlamp and interior light, and a backup switch in case of connection of an additional appliance. On the lower ELECTROPULT located: receptacle for connection of a portable lamp 12 V, the ignition switch, the control spiral heater control lamp of the generator, switch heater control lamp, heater and fuse socket.
 
Main connecting wires laid in pipes of the frame of the cab. The holes at the location of the additional conductors are isolated by rubber bushings. Power (12 volts) and the Executive of the electric circuit from the summing snowmobile flexible stranded cable with connectors “mom” and “dad” are installed on the rear of the cab.
 
Steering gear and tie bar from sidecar С3Д, but partially modified. Steering wheel diameter 400 mm — homemade. In the steering wheel hub is installed an emergency stop button engine snowmobile.
 
Ski — in stainless steel. Structurally designed in the form of pre-bent panels, welded together by spot welding.
 
During operation of the tandem should be borne in mind that a fairly wide track skis, they are a relatively small angle of rotation in amount with a significant length of the machine require to maneuver a lot of space. Besides the big loads in the connecting cabin with snowmobile limit the speed. We must be particularly careful when passing an unfamiliar routes, fraught with snow-covered obstacles.
 
And in conclusion. Unfortunately, lack of materials did not allow to fully realize what was planned. Often had to compromise (hence the name tandem), choosing between performance and a real possibility.
