Control Line Racing Car Model 2.5 cm³: V. Popov Design

Racing of class E2

The proposed car model showed the best-in-class result at the European Championship in 1980, and in 1983 it reached a maximum speed of 252 km/h.

The weight of the fully equipped racing car is 1250 g (limit 1500 g). This allows changing the load on the wheels depending on the race conditions by installing additional weights.

The load-bearing part (pan) is milled from D16T material.

The driven axle is equipped with a pendulum-type suspension. The rocker is made of D16T alloy and consists of a pair of double-arm levers fastened with screws. Ball bearings 3X7 mm are mounted in the rocker — this reduces wheel play and reduces loads on the bearings.

The front end of the rocker is suspended on the pan using a steel guide block, the rear one can move up and down along a guide groove milled in the pan. Above it, a damping device is attached — a brass cup with a duralumin piston fitted to it. The piston is connected to the rear arm of the rocker by a light connecting rod, compressed air exits the cup through a Ø3 mm hole in the bottom. The shock absorber is a compression spring with an outer diameter of 10 mm (seven turns of OVS wire Ø0.5 mm). The front suspension travel is about 10 mm, the force on the wheels at maximum shock absorber compression is about 400 g.

Control line racing car model with 2.5 cm3 engine:
1 — ball bearing 3X7 mm, 2 — driven wheel axle, 3 — driven wheel disc, 4 — driven wheel tire, 5 — guide block, 6 — driven axle suspension axis, 7 — driven axle rocker, 8 — front shock absorber assembly, 9 — shock absorber connecting rod, 10 — fuel tank, 11 — stop device assembly, 12 — pan, 13 — engine, 14 — control line bar mounting bracket, 15 — flywheel, 16 — gearbox housing suspension bracket, 17 — gearbox housing, 18 — rear shock absorber assembly, 19 — rear shock absorber bracket, 20 — support leg, 21 — body fairing, 22 — resonant exhaust pipe, 23 — drive wheel tire, 24 — inner disc, 25 — outer disc, 26 — drive axle, made integral with the driven gear of the gearbox, 27 — ball bearing 6X13 mm, 28 — ball bearing 5X13 mm, 29 — axle, made integral with the drive gear of the gearbox, 30 — bearing housing, 31 — bushing, 32 — drive transmission cardan shaft, 33 — ball bearing 3X7 mm.

The driven wheels, mounted on a steel axle, are made using traditional technology: rubber is welded onto duralumin discs. Maximum disc thickness 3 mm, wheel diameter 50 mm, weight about 15 g. Such wheels withstand high loads without significant deformations.

The drive axle includes a reduction gearbox with bevel gears and a shock absorber, which repeats the same element of the driven axle in principle of operation and design. The spring made of OVS wire Ø0.8 mm has five turns with an outer diameter of 8 mm.

The gearbox is of console type. All its parts are made of heat-treated steel 40Х. The driven gear together with two ball bearings is placed in a separately made cup, which is installed in the housing when assembling the unit. A bushing with a hexagonal socket for cardan connection with the engine shaft is fixed on the gear axis with a pin. All bearing seat holes are lapped so that their housings enter the places with slight force. The axle is suspended on a bracket fixed in the pan with two screws.

The drive wheels consist of two duralumin discs and a rubber washer each. The tire diameter is selected within 75—80 mm depending on the engine power and track quality. The rubber is of medium hardness, type В-14. The inner disc of each wheel is mounted on a conical split bushing, the outer one, which holds the rubber washer, is fixed with three M3 screws.

Power transmission. The torque from the engine to the gearbox is transmitted using a “cardan” shaft — a cylindrical rod with spherical hexagons at the ends.

The model’s tank is of open type. It is soldered from stainless steel 0.3 mm thick.

The resonant exhaust pipe with a wall thickness of 0.3 mm is turned from duralumin. Its front cylindrical part forms a telescopic connection with the exhaust pipe. On the pan, the pipe is supported by a metal bracket.

The body fairing is made of linden wood, impregnated with epoxy resin. A titanium control line bar with a cross-section of 2Х12 mm is fixed with two M3 screws on a steel bracket.

The model is equipped with an engine of its own design. The scavenging is five-channel, piston diameter 16.25 mm, stroke — 12 mm.
