Cottage Furniture Set DIY from 20×30 mm Slats — Plans

If you have slats, you don’t need boards

For many years Modelist-Konstruktor has been introducing its readers to various furniture designs intended for do-it-yourself construction. Unfortunately, as reader mail shows, not all home craftsmen who want to get started can take on replicating them. This especially applies to residents of large cities. The main reason is a shortage of “building” materials or, at best, only a very limited selection at hand. So today, in response to numerous requests, we offer you a set of cottage furniture that can be made from practically one “standard size”—20×30 mm slats. You will only need a few additional bars with a cross section of 20×50 mm.

The set is designed for furnishing a cottage and veranda. It consists of two chair-benches, a low table, and a pair of stools. The latter can also be used as original floor lamps. Additional elements that give the layout a finished look can be a “stepped” étagère for flowers or books and a bed headboard. All items can easily be adapted “to your needs” by changing overall dimensions during construction to suit specific conditions, as well as varying the quantity.

The construction principle for all pieces in the set is the same—a simple spatial frame made of bars, covered with slats. Main dimensions are shown in the drawings. Frame parts are joined with screws and wood glue applied to the joints.

To give a “civilized” appearance, wooden parts are coated with two layers of clear furniture varnish after sanding. If the set is also intended for use outdoors, the slats should be treated with linseed oil and painted with oil-based paint.
