“Plank” furniture set

Special inexpensive and practical furniture for a garden cottage is not available for sale yet, so people usually bring all sorts of old things there. But what looked good once in a city apartment will look out of place and feel uncomfortable in a small country room: dark polishing on cabinets, worn upholstery tapestry…

So why not outfit the country interior with homemade special furniture? With a small set of tools, available building materials, and inexpensive upholstery fabric, you can make a simple and original set, one of the variants of which is offered today by artist-designer Y. Bolshakov from Leningrad.

Chair
Chair:
1 — lower horizontal frame battens, 2 — post, 3 — horizontal seat battens, 4 — backrest post, 5 — diagonal tie, 6 — backrest boards, 7 — seat boards, 8 — front batten.
First of all, assemble the side frames. For this, put the horizontal battens 1, 3 onto posts 2, 4 and fasten them with screws. Moreover, the inner batten 3 is 20 mm shorter than the outer one. Assemble the second side frame using the same method. After that, connect both frames with the front batten 8, which is fastened to the ends of the inner horizontal battens 3, and with the diagonal tie 5. Then, in sequence, fasten all the remaining seat boards 720 mm long and the backrest boards 680 mm long.
Stool
Stool:
1 — side frames, 2 — front batten, 3 — seat boards, 4 — diagonal tie.
The design is very simple. All features can be seen in the drawing, so no additional explanation is required.

The proposed furniture set is made from boards of the same cross-section, 70×20 mm. Using hardwoods (birch, spruce, pine, etc.) will increase the service life of the set. For better finishing, before assembly you should process all board surfaces with a plane or jointer, and then sand them with sandpaper. The sawn-off ends are desirable to sand. The joints of all items in the set are the same. This creates a unified stylistic solution for the whole set. For stronger connections of different parts, they should be made using glue (PVA, epoxy, carpenter’s).

Table
Table:
1 — side frames, 2 — tabletop boards, 3 — crosspieces, 4 — diagonal ties, 5 — connecting board.
First of all, assemble the side frames, which are joined with two diagonal ties 4. For a stiffer connection between them, mount the connecting board 5 on screws. Assemble the tabletop separately from boards 2 connected with crosspieces 3. Install the finished tabletop onto the base and fix it with screws to the upper horizontal battens of the frames.
Shelf unit
Shelf unit:
1 — horizontal battens, 2 — posts, 3 — shelf boards, 4 — diagonal tie.
Assembly is similar to the previous ones, only the paired boards-posts in the side frames are positioned vertically. And the horizontal battens 1 serve as supports for the shelves, which are fastened with screws. To make the structure rigid, attach a diagonal tie to the rear posts. The construction can “grow” if you assemble another shelf unit and install it on top. Protruding parts of the upper horizontal battens will protect against longitudinal shifting at the joint.

All assembled items of the set must be coated with drying oil, furniture varnish, or parquet varnish. If the wood has many defects and the texture is not attractive, you can use an enamel coating — it will hide imperfections, but the paint color should be chosen according to the interior.

Armchair
Armchair:
1 — side frames, 2 — front batten, 3 — seat boards, 4 — backrest boards, 5 — diagonal tie, 6 — short seat batten.
The assembly sequence is the same as before, but when connecting the frames, first fasten the front batten 2 and the short seat batten, and then the diagonal tie, the seat boards, and the backrest boards.

Individual items of the “Doshchechka” set are allowed to be used both indoors and in the yard.

Chairs, armchairs, and the sofa can be made more comfortable by placing cushions on them filled with foam crumbs or feathers. Covers are desirable to sew from dense fabric in bright colors — tent fabric, linen with lavsan, calico. They can be removable (on “zippers” or buttons). The room will look very festive and complete if you make a tablecloth for the table and curtains for the windows from the same fabric.

Sofa bed
Sofa bed:
1 — side frame of the main daybed, 2 — diagonal tie, 3 — boards of the horizontal ties, 4 — front boards, 5 — deck boards, 6 — middle support frame of the main daybed, 7 — seat boards (variant “sofa”), 8 — side frame of the folding daybed, 9 — rear horizontal tie, 10 — middle support of the folding daybed.

The sofa bed consists of two items: the main daybed and the folding one, connected with card or piano hinges.

The main daybed is assembled from two side frames 1, and the middle support 6, which at first are connected with boards of the horizontal ties, fastened with screws to the lower horizontal battens of the frames. Then set the frames in a strictly vertical position and secure them with diagonal ties along the middle vertical posts. Fasten the front board to the ends of the inner horizontal battens of the frames and then cover (sheath) it in sequence with deck boards.

The folding daybed differs a little from the main one, because in the assembled state it serves as a sofa. Its assembly should be started with laying out the deck boards. Fasten the side frames 8 and the middle support 10 onto them; these are secured with the rear horizontal tie 9 and the front board 4. Then, along the lower horizontal battens of the side frames and the middle support, sequentially fasten the sofa seat boards 7. Connect the front boards of the main daybed and the folding one using piano or card hinges.
