The magazine “Modelist-Constructor” (No. 6, 1983) published drawings of a miracle stove designed by I. Maslov. Wonderful stove! Especially for those who love to travel.
We have introduced, so to speak, an oriental accent into the organization of country holidays: we have designed and now carry with us a folding barbecue, we call it a “diplomat” – for its resemblance (when folded) to a common briefcase with a hard case.
We get to vacation spots by bicycle, and more often by public transport. Therefore, we try to take with us things of minimal weight and dimensions. The “diplomat” grill fully meets these requirements.
The main element of its design is the base box, welded from 0.8 mm thick stainless steel sheet (in extreme cases, you can use tin, but it quickly rusts and burns out).
The bottom is dotted with many Ø 6 mm holes for air access. Six lugs are attached to the bottom by contact welding: four for removable legs, two for a non-removable handle (the material of the legs and handle is steel wire Ø 6 mm).

1, 13 — side walls, 2, 12 — end walls, 3 — side wall flap brackets, 4 — base box, 5 — base bottom, 6 — rivet-axis, 7 — removable legs, 8 — spikes, 9 — carrying handle, 10 — latch plate, 11 — spot welding, 14, 15 – ears, 16 – mesh, 17 – grille.
The end walls of the barbecue are hinged on the short sides of the base. When folded, they close the internal volume like lids. The locks are flat skewers slipped under steel strips welded to the end walls.
The side walls are steel, removable. Brackets-flaps are welded to them, serving to support the long sides of the base. In a vertical position, the side walls are held by the corresponding end flaps.
The grill is intended mainly for preparing barbecue. But we put an additional grid on its side walls, made up of pieces of Ø 5 mm stainless steel wire welded together, a kettle, pot or frying pan on it, and we cook almost any dish.
Another structural element is placed inside the base – a mesh with 5×5 mm cells, welded to a frame made of 10×10 mm steel angle. The mesh is located on spikes at a certain distance from the bottom, thus ensuring good air access to the fuel and more uniform combustion.
In the stowed position, all removable parts of the grill are placed in the base box, closed with end walls and locked with skewers.
